In a petrol hybrid car, the internal combustion engine and the electric motor work together to provide power to the wheels. The electric motor assists the engine during acceleration, reducing the load on the engine and improving efficiency. It can also operate on its own at low speeds or during light loads, using electricity stored in the battery pack.

The battery pack in a petrol hybrid car is usually recharged through regenerative braking, where energy that would otherwise be lost during braking is captured and used to recharge the battery. Some hybrid cars can also recharge the battery by running the engine, which acts as a generator.
